Project Description: |
|
Folic Acid Education program increases the knowledge and intake of folic acid among Arkansas women of childbearing age. |
Outcomes
- Developed three educational components:
-
Public Education--through health fairs and featured articles appearing in relevant news publications.
-
Post-partum Patient Education--through counseling of postpartum women as to benefits of continuing pre-natal folic vitamins.
-
Health Care Provider Education--offering educational pamphlets and samples of folic starter to physicians.
Lives Affected
3,000 attended health fairs.
230 post-partum women counseled.
28 clinics supplied educational material.
Cost Effectiveness
Though no clinical data was supplied as to program outcomes, the agency hopes to positively affect and reduce the expected number (26) of babies born in Arkansas with spina bifida. The estimated lifetime cost for one infant with this defect is $555,500.
