Food For Thought program addresses childhood hunger by providing high-protein foods in backpacks. |
Outcomes
- Identified the most nutritious mix of affordable foods for backpacks.

Developed menu guide and procedures for participating schools that distribute the backpacks.

Purchased and distributed food to schools, with increase in protein-rich foods and decrease in high calorie, high-fat foods.

Teachers reported the following observed behaviors from participating students:

- 42% had a more trusting or better relationship with the school.

- 34% appeared less stressed or worried.

- 33% had better self esteem.

- 32% were healthier.

- 32% were friendlier or had better relationships with other students.

- 30% had more interest in school.
-
- 28% had improved attendance.
-
- 28% had improved conduct, less detention, less behavior problems.

- 24% had improved grades.
Lives Affected
22,720 students (through 556 schools) provided with evening and weekend backpacks of more nutritious foods.
Cost Effectiveness
The grant allowed Rice Depot to greatly improve the nutritional value of the food it distributes.
