Project Description: |
|
ICAN Study program serves 4th thru 6th grades at Elkins Public School District providing a partnership between student, family, and school to fight childhood obesity. |
Outcomes
- Six of the seven school districts in the Boston Mountain Educational Co-Op implemented the ICAN program at the third and fourth grade level. The ICAN curriculum has been determined to be age appropriate, and both students and teachers responded well to the “hands-on” approach to learning about nutrition.
-
Preliminary data indicates that ICAN was successful in producing nutritional knowledge gains in the third and fourth grade populations. The ICAN program was successful in establishing more than the 90 minutes of required physical education time per week in participating schools. However, the nine-week intervention failed to produce meaningful improvements in bariatric measures of health.
Lives Affected
1,051 students in six northwest Arkansas school districts participated in a nine-week curriculum about nutrition and exercise.
Cost Effectiveness
The ICAN program is most economically feasible in schools where facilities, staffing and the ability to acquire food for the meal program are available.
