Folic Acid Education program reduces the occurrence of foliate-preventable birth defects in Arkansas. |
Outcomes
- Provided public health education through Hispanic public service announcements and through community health fairs.
-
Counseled 205 postpartum women regarding the benefits of a folic enriched diet.
-
Provided 3.5 hours of continuing education to nursing profession.
Lives Affected
205 postpartum women and 55 nurses.
Cost Effectiveness
At the current rate of infants born with spina bifida or anencephaly, and nueral tube defects (roughly 7 of every 10,000 births in Arkansas), we can expect 26 babies annually with these birth defects ultimately requiring $14.4 million ($555,500 per child) in medical and long-term care. This program addresses those costs.
