Project Description: |
|
Support the coalition’s mission to protect the young and the old by distributing child-safety seats and bike helmets and providing screenings and assessment to prevent falls among the elderly. |
Outcomes
- Taught bicycle safety and provided fitted helmets to second graders in 81 public schools in six counties of Northeast Arkansas.
-
Provided Prevention Medchecks to individuals over age 55, to review seniors’ current prescription and OTC medication for possible interaction, perform Vision Tests and referrals when indicated, and give Home Environmental Checklists to look for home hazards.
-
Conducted a child passenger seat safety clinic and distributed/installed 89 safety seats for children.
Lives Affected
Affected 7,124 second graders, 383 adults age 55 and older, and 97 families who use child passenger seats.
Cost Effectiveness
These services can prevent costly injuries down the road. Arkansas Children’s Hospital estimates that head injuries from bicycle accidents costs $145,000-$175,000, and a child’s injuries from car collisions result in average cost of $85,000-$90,000 to treat.
