Project Description: |
|
SAFE KIDS of Northeast Arkansas program provides national child-passenger safety technical training for law enforcement officers, fall prevention medical check for the elderly and bicycle safety presentations and free helmet distribution to 2nd grade students. |
Outcomes
- Made presentations to 47 public elementary schools across five area counties.
-
Purchased bike helmets for 80% of 4th-5th grade children in Crittenden County schools.
-
Performed medication checks, and vision and gait screenings at the 6th annual Healthy Aging Fair, as well as provided elderly attendees at the fair a Safe Home Index to better identify falling hazards at home.
-
Trained law enforcement officers.
Lives Affected
4,000 previously unprotected biking children now have bike helmets.
3,380 2nd graders attended bike safety education.
176 senior citizens were assessed and provided home hazard brochures.
83 children received child safety seat checks or newly installed seats.
Cost Effectiveness
No data for 2004 year grant results, but for 2003, the coalition sampled school children who previously received bike helmets and found that 84.6% self-reported that they still wore their helmets when biking, and 94% were able to recall two-thirds of the bike education material.
