Project Description: |
|
Kids Camp program addresses childhood obesity. |
Outcomes
- Enrolled 50 children in camp, of which 70% were overweight or at risk.
-
Recruited and trained 21 students to serve as counselors.
-
Decreased blood pressure in 50% of the children.
-
Decreased weight in less than 50% of enrollees.
Lives Affected
50 fourth and fifth graders in Jonesboro.
Cost Effectiveness
Decided to keep some of the normally required capital costs to a minimum given that the offsetting income from camp fees in the first year would not be sufficient. Though early intervention of such programs typically proves to save health and economic costs further down the road, the up-front costs associated with the initial program outlays often distort the cost-benefits in the short term.
