Addressing the Arkansas Epidemic program addresses statewide childhood obesity. |
Outcomes
- Identified children at risk of obesity, by measuring body-mass index (BMI) of all children in KIDS FIRST and Head Start -- 500 and 1,200, respectively.

Provided general intervention methods and protocol to 100% of families with children meeting obesity criteria.

42 children enrolled and participated in focused intervention program at KIDS FIRST.

Developed and pilot-tested a nutrition/activity curriculum for use in pre-school classrooms.

Increased knowledge of the impact of obesity through statewide conferences, health fair exhibits and media.
Lives Affected
1,700 children assessed for obesity, of which 1,200 received group education and 42 received targeted interventions.
Cost Effectiveness
This grant leveraged sponsorships, media time and contributions from such entities as the Arkansas Governor’s Developmental Disabilities Council, Arkansas Dept. of Health, Arkansas Dietetic Association and KATV. Increased level of awareness of managing obesity among at-risk families.
